The Significant Other

Staying with the theme of confusion: if you'd say that, after nine years of acquaintance, I should be able to predict the behaviour of my significant other to some degree of accuracy, I would reply, yes, that would be a reasonable assumption. Indeed, I should anticipate her every desire as I know to expect 3 to come after 2.

Seems it doesn't quite work that way. Despite being around her, a few of her thoughts and motivations seem to be as elusive to me as Excalibur. Her next word as much a surprise as the passing shadow of a ghost.

So, am I missing clues? Is there a hint in the small pause before answering me, as if she needs a moment to collect the mental strength to respond? Could there be some information in the way she starts every sentence with uttering my name in a sigh? And what treasure of intelligence could be mined from the fact she hangs up on me in mid-sentence? Hmm.... what is she is trying to convey? I said something wrong?
